Replacing our 30 year old Pool Pump

As you might remember, in 2021 I replaced our very old DE filter with a new cartridge filter…..link here.

Reminder of the final setup in 2021

Since then, everything was working fine….until…..the hottest day of this cold 2023 year hit…… my also VERY OLD pool pump croaked. One look at the featured image (above) and I was shocked that it lasted this long!

Not having any other choice but to spend $1200 at Leslie’s for a new pump, I was surprised at how much things have changed in pool pumps in the last 30 years.

Our brand new Pentair pool pump

Cool stuff!

The new pool pump is fully programmable for 3 (4 if you count Quick Clean) settings where you can adjust: Start time (for the #1 option only), Run Duration, and the Speed of the pump (!!!).

There is a default program setting that (for #1) starts at 8 AM and runs at 3000 rpm for 2 hours, then (#2) at 10 AM shifts to 1400 rpm for 10 hours, and lastly (for #3) runs for 2 hours at 2400 rpm. Then it shuts off and rests until 8 AM the next day.

I changed that to my own custom program today (after recovering from a harrowing 100+ degree manual labor day installing the new pump yesterday).

My custom program: #1 starts at 7 AM and runs at 3200 rpm for 3 hours, then at 10 AM it runs for the next 7 hours at 1600 rpm, and finally, at 5 PM #3 runs at 2400 rpm until rest time at 7 PM.

This can all be changed depending on how the pool looks and the chemistry is still ok.

VERY COOL!

Here are some pics of the control panel for setting #2:

Cool feature: Power being used!

On another topic……the best hint Mike at Leslie’s gave me was to take the on/off tabs off my yellow timer and just let it run! No need for an electrician, unless I want to neaten things up a bit.

Timer with the on / off tabs
Timer free to move without the on / off tabs! (i.e. Power is always on)

Connecting the power and ground wires (one to the main ground and one to the green screw inside) was a snap (except for amount of effort needed to wrangle those THICK ass wires!) and the pool pump came up ready to use….as soon as I remembered to glue the pipes (which the pump rudely reminded me I forgot…..gettin old……and WET!). 🙂

Summary

Technology changes after 30 years, even for pool pumps. 🙂

I love this new pump and hope it gives me the same number of years of reliable service that the old pump gave me……

Well…….I’d be happy with at least a few years. 🙂

Geek on!
